What we do
We accept new and gently used stuffed animals. When we receive used stuffed animals, we wash, clean, repair, and add bows and decorations to the stuffed animals to make them like new again. Small new items are preferred by Police and Fire & Rescue, due to their limited space in their vehicles and the health condition of many of the children they help. However, when we do receive large stuffed animals, we hold on to them for various children's homes and libraries.
How it all began:
In 1997, Cammie Sanders founded project SAFE. She has overseen this project from 1997-2004 with many fond memories. However, new obligations have kept her from being able to be as fully involved with this project as she has in the past. In August 2004, Cheryl Famigletti of the Texas Chapter began overseeing project SAFE in the hopes of carrying on Cammie's great work.
What you can do to help:
SAFE has received thousands of stuffed animals from generous donators in the past. However, many children are still in need of our help. Many charities take donations of used stuffed animals, but most of these groups sell the stuffed animals donating part of the money to help various children's groups. Many times as little as half of the money collected from the sell of your donation makes it to the children because of these charities' large staff and overhead. SAFE is run completely by volunteers who are not financially compensated for their time and efforts. Secondly, SAFE volunteers distribute your donation to organizations who give your stuffed animals directly to children in need. If you have used stuffed animals you are no longer using or you children have outgrown, please donate them to SAFE where you know they will benefit children in need directly. There are several locations you can drop off your stuffed animal donations or you can mail them directly to a SAFE volunteer's home. If you would like to make a donation, please contact a chapter near you.
Not only does SAFE need your donations, we need your help as well. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find volunteers in every state. Many states are so large more than one volunteer is needed. In the past, stuffed animals have been offered for donation, but without a SAFE Chapter near the donor, collection was not possible due to expensive shipping costs. Heading a Chapter is not difficult and does not require a large amount of time, but can be very rewarding. Organizing a SAFE Chapter in your area or a donation drive at their school is a fantastic way to cultivate a spirit of giving in your children. Volunteer work and community service can be very beneficial on applications for college entrance and scholarships. If you or someone you know would be interested in starting a chapter in your area or organizing a stuffed animal drive, please email Cheryl Famigletti to help you get started.
